Fabrication of Polysaccharide-Based Coaxial Fibers Using Wet Spinning Processes and Their Protein Loading Properties

Fibers composed of polysaccharides are a promising candidate to be applied for biomaterials such as absorbable surgical sutures, textile fabrics, and hierarchical three-dimensional scaffolds. In this work, in order fabricate biocompatible fibers with controlled-release abilities, the fabrication coaxial calcium alginate (ALG-Ca) polyion complexes (PICs) consisting chitosan (CHI) chondroitin sulfate C (CS), denoted ALG-PIC fibers, by using wet spinning process, evaluation their molecular loading release behavior were performed. The diameter mechanical strength obtained increased increasing concentrations CHI solution PIC coatings. This indicated that higher afforded thicker coating layer. Further, fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled-bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA)-loaded successfully prepared. FITC-BSA exhibited slower rate at initial state than ALG-Ca, indicating coatings suppressed an burst molecules. Accordingly, fabricated can utilized sustained-release drug carriers.
